Vietnamese police bust a $340 million illegal football betting ring

Vietnamese police have busted two illegal football betting operations that have been operating online since June 2015 in northern Vietnam. The 55 year old ring leader, Bui Khac Hien, along with 23 accomplices were arrested and searched for their roles in the online betting rings that netted VND7.6 trillion (US$340) since June 2015. In addition to the arrests, police also confiscated a car, VND200 million (US$8,900) in cash, and electronic equipment that was used by the suspects. In Vietnam, gambling is illegal, except for a few “foreigner only” casinos, and state-run lottery. Persons engaging in illegal gambling risk sentences of up to ten years in prison.
