The Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is imploded

Having opened its doors in 1955, and being known for its mobster connections and its famous headliners including Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Liberace, and Elvis Presley, the Riviera Hotel and Casino was a true Las Vegas icon. The casino was featured in several movies including Casino and the original Ocean’s 11. However, at 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday the 14th of June, the 24-story Monaco Tower came crashing down 61 years after it opened on the Las Vegas Strip. Its new owner, The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority paid $42 million to demolish the 13-building campus. The Monte Carlo Tower will be imploded in August. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority plan on using the site to expand the city’s convention center.
