The Rise Of Sports Gambling

The Rise Of Sports Gambling

Everyone knows that gambling on sporting events was frowned on for a long time. Pete Rose is one example of an athlete who inadvertently threw away his career simply to bet on the sport he loved so much. Since then, attitudes towards sports betting have changed drastically.

With the advent of online casinos and sports betting sites, gambling on sporting events has become a popular pastime for people all over the world. Since 2014 some have been pushing for legalizing sports betting, including the Commissioner of the NBA.

Over a period of two years the MLB, NBA and NHL have begun working with websites where fantasy sports teams are created and bet on. The gambling and sports industries have slowly been merging to create a new form of entertainment in sports gambling.

Another sports organization in which some teams are associated with sports gambling online is the NFL. Any NFL team is allowed to make a deal with a sports betting site, such as the deal the Pittsburgh Steelers have with a site called Draft Kings. This allows fantasy sports sites to make arrangements with individual teams without organizations such as the NFL having to officially support sports gambling.

Most major leagues don’t want to fully support legalizing betting money on sports. All of the major leagues went to court to battle New Jersey’s attempt at making sports betting legal. There is no major league that is less supportive of this than the NFL is. The NFL has spent more money lobbying against the legalization of sports gambling than the MLB, NBA and NHL put together, despite the fact that New Jersey legislation is behind legalizing it. Other states that have fought to legalize it include New York, Indiana, Minnesota and South Carolina. Even Pennsylvania has been pushing to add fantasy sports leagues to their casinos.

The American Gaming Association has stated that in 2014 a total of $216 million was spent by sports fans gambling on the outcome of their favorite team’s games. While this involved legal sports gambling, in years prior those who were illegally gambling on sports games bet roughly a collective $150 billion.

Also in 2014 fantasy sports teams soared in popularity with 41 million people reportedly gambling in fantasy sports leagues. The daily fantasy websites are well visited by sports fans that aren’t afraid to place bets against their friends. Though gambling takes place on these daily fantasy sites, they are not actually considered to be gambling sites. The reason for this is that one’s chances of winning their bet are based on skills rather than chance. As a result, daily fantasy sites are protected from the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act that was passed in 2006. This act states that gambling sites cannot allow anyone to place a bid online.

Many people have gotten behind the idea of making it legal for sports gambling to take place online as online casinos and sports betting sites are earning large revenues.
