Texas Hold’em Poker Rules

Texas hold’em is the most popular of all poker games played at casinos and online poker rooms around the world. The game is spread in limit, pot limit and of course no limit versions.

The Blinds

At the start of the game, blinds are posted by the two seats to the left of “the button” which is the “dealer” of that particular round. The two players closest to the left of the button places the small blind and big blind. The button moves clockwise after every hand of hold’em.

Preflop

At this point every player is dealt two cards, dealing starts at the small blind position and proceeds clockwise. These cards are you’re down (hole) cards.

Betting round now starts at the player to the left of the big blind (considered to be under the gun) and continues clockwise. The player has the option to call or raise. The player in the big blind can check if no one else has raised their hand.

The Flop

After the first betting round is over three cards (the flop) will be dealt which are called community cards. This is now the beginning of the second betting round and action is now on the player to the left of the button. The player may decide to check, bet or fold and action goes clockwise around the table until all bets and raises are complete.

The Turn

The dealer then flips another community card (the turn) and another betting round begins, starting with the active player closest to the left of the button. Again the options are to check to your opponent, bet or fold.

The River

When betting is finished on the turn a final community card is shown (the river) and the last round begins. The same options are available check, bet or fold, starting with the active player closest to the left of the dealer button.

The Showdown

Once the final betting round is over the player with the best five-card poker hand (made with the five community cards and the two hole cards) wins the pot. A player may use any combination of their own hole cards and community cards to make the best hand. If multiple players share the same hand at showdown then the pot will be divided accordingly between them.

Texas Hold’em Betting Rules

Texas Hold’em rules remain the same for limit, no limit and pot limit poker games, except for these betting differences.

Limit Hold’em

In limit hold’em a maximum of four bets is allowed by each player during any betting round. This includes a bet, raise, re-raise, and then after three raises it’s capped (which is the final raise in any given betting round).

No Limit Hold’em

In no limit hold’em, the raise amount must at least equal the previous bet or raise. If you are entering the pot with a raise you must at least match the big blind amount. For example, if the first player to act bets $10 then the second player must raise to a minimum of $20.

Pot Limit Hold’em

In pot limit hold’em the maximum raise amount that a player can make must at least match the previous bet amount. When entering the pot, you must bet an amount equal to at least the big blind to stay in the game.
