Phil Mickelson paid off nearly $2 million gambling debt to professional gambler Billy Walters

As revealed by court documents, Phil Mickelson paid Las Vegas sports gambler William “Billy” Walters, $1.95 million in September 2012. That was the year during which Mickelson reportedly earned $48 million. According to the feds, Walters communicated investment tips to Mickelson during a time when Mickelson owed him money for gambling. Taking advantage of the tips received from Walters, Mickelson earned $931,000 on trades. A few months later, the golfer transferred $1.95 million to Walters. Mickelson has agreed to pay back the money he made from the trades with interest, and is not facing any criminal charges. However, Walters is currently facing several counts of securities fraud. Walters maintains his innocence and has denied any wrongdoing.
