The History of Bingo

Bingo has its origins in two places. The name comes from early North American bingo games, where the player shouted “beano” upon winning. This game was played with small numbered discs. The origin of the game itself though comes from Italy. The Italians ran a lottery game in the sixteenth century, which they called “Lo Giuco de Lotto D’Italia”, it is the same game that is played every Saturday night in the country, still today. The game moved rapidly from Italy to France, Germany and the United Kingdom in the next couple of centuries, before finding its way via immigrants into the United States. Bingo was most popular during the period from 1950-1980, when bingo clubs were commonly frequented establishments. They had died out by and large, by the late 90s and only a handful remain open to today. Bingo has endured though, with the advent of online and mobile bingo, and it is currently enjoyed its most popular period ever in the United Kingdom, on these two new platforms of bingo gameplay.

How to play Bingo

No player should really have any difficulty learning how to play bingo. The game consists of a pot (either a real one, or a digital one), and numbers are drawn out from it. The player will have a card (or a number of cards), which they must match the numbers on them, to the numbers drawn from the pot. If a player crosses of a specific series of numbers off their bingo card with those drawn from the pot, they will win. Some bingo games have multiple prizes, others have just one. In order to known what numbers you must check off, you must know what kind of bingo game you are playing, for there are several of them.

90 ball bingo

90 ball bingo is the most common form of bingo, and it can be found mostly in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. This bingo game uses 90 balls, and cards are structured in a 3×9 format. Players can win money by matching a line (one horizontal row of correct numbers), two lines (two horizontal rows of correct numbers) or a full house (all numbers on the card marked off). You can also sometimes win a jackpot prize by marking off all the numbers on the card within a specific time frame of numbers. For example, if you clear your card before 30 numbers are drawn in total. This is known as the “Snowball”. There is always more than one prize in 90 ball bingo.

80 ball bingo

80 ball bingo is designed for those players that think 90 balls are too many, and 75 balls are too few. 80 ball bingo is played on a 4×4 ticket, with of course, 80 balls in the pot. Players can win by matching lines or patterns (formed by marking off numbers to form a shape on the card), depending on what kind of rules the bingo game has.

75 ball bingo

75 ball bingo is most popular in North America. This game contains only 75 balls, and cards are set up in a 5×5 grid structure. Generally, players always have to use patterns to win, and there is often only a single prize. However, some coverall games will allow players to win a grand jackpot, if they manage to clear their card of numbers within a specific range of numbers being called. This is known as a “coverall” or a “black out”, and is effectively the same rule as the “Snowball” in 90 ball bingo.
