New York – 13 members of a crime family are busted in “Operation Shark Bait”
Thirteen members of the Genovese crime family were arrested and accused of loan-sharking, bootlegging and tax evasion. According to the New York attorney general’s office, the suspects ran a Costa Rica based wire room that took millions of dollars in wagers on college and professional sports events.
“These defendants allegedly went to great lengths to trap their victims with exorbitant rates, all while evading our gambling laws and taking offshore bets,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “No matter how complex or clever the scheme, we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to take down traditional organized crime.”
Two of the suspects arrested are also accused of avoiding state taxes by selling more than 30,000 illegal cigarettes.
