Kenner, Louisiana – A postal worker sells $630K worth of stamps and gambles the money away at Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans

It might very well be the biggest internal theft in the history of the U.S. Postal Service, but Ryan Cortez, 46, a former postal worker is accused of selling approximately $630,000 worth of stamps online, and embezzling money from a church where he was a treasurer.

Authorities became aware of Cortez’s activities after Postal OIG agents were notified by PayPal and eBay regarding significant quantities of U.S. Postal stamps being sold by Cortez on ebay. An investigation revealed Cortez’s bank account receiving large deposits on a regular basis. During one month alone in the summer of 2018, there was a deposit of more than $58,000 into Cortez’s bank account, when Cortez annual salary was only $70,818. Authorities also learned that large amounts of money were regularly withdrawn at Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans.

Cortez was arrested for Misappropriation of Postal Funds or Property. If convicted, Cortez faces a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment, followed by up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000.00 fine.
