Italian police seize assets worth 2 billion Euros from the Mafia

Italian police have seized assets worth well over 2 billion euros, or $2.2 billion USD and issued arrest warrants for 41 persons. Some of the assets that have been seized include; 1,500 betting shops, 82 gambling websites, 45 Italian companies, 11 foreign firms, some of which are located in Spain, Malta, Romania and Austria, and numerous properties. According to police, the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia organization, which controls much of the cocaine trade in Europe, has been using the gambling operations to launder illicit cash. The mafia group “recycled an enormous amount of ‘dirty’ money through the use of gaming accounts assigned to willing or unwitting people.” said police.
