Illegal gambling ring busted in Taiwan

An illegal gambling ring that took wagers on the upcoming presidential and legislative elections that are scheduled to be held on the 16th of January was shut down by the Taiwanese authorities. Thanks to a number of tip-offs, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office raided 31 locations around Taiwan on Saturday the 2nd of January, arrested 45 suspects and confiscated NT$20.68 million in cash, although records indicated that a total of NT$1.4 billion (US$42.36 million) in wagers were placed. Prosecutors said that the gambling ring was very well organized, and the largest of its kind to operate in Taiwan. Running an unlicensed gambling operation in Taiwan is a criminal offense that is punishable by up to three years in jail.
