Guangdong Province, China – Chinese police bust an illegal cryptocurrency World Cup gambling syndicate on the dark web

Chinese authorities have shut down an illegal World Cup betting syndicate that was operating on the dark web for more than 8 months. The gambling operation took well over $1.5 billion USD in cryptocurrency wagers (namely Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin) from approximately 330,000 worldwide bettors. Guangdong police have arrested 540 people that are suspected of being part of the dark web gambling syndicate, and shut down more than 70 gambling apps and websites. Approximately 5 million yuan in cash and 10 million yuan in cryptocurrencies were also seized.
