Governor Scott Walker rejects plans for Kenosha casino

Governor Scott Walker has rejected a request from the Menominee Nation for permission to build an off-reservation casino on the former Dairyland Greyhound Park property west of the city of Kenosha. In a news release, Walker said; “After a comprehensive review of the potential economic impact of the proposed Kenosha casino project, the risk to the state’s taxpayers is too great,” The tribe was hoping to build the $800 million casino in partnership with Hard Rock International, a project which would have potentially created 3,000 jobs, and more than 10,000 jobs over the next 10 years. However, a casino in Kenosha could cost taxpayers up to $100 million because of state agreements with the Potawatomi tribe that owns and operates a casino in Milwaukee. Under its agreement, Wisconsin would be required to reimburse the Potawatomi tribe for any lost revenue as a result of the Kenosha casino.
