Gambling laws around the World

Gambling laws around the World

There has been an increase in the number of people who gamble in land based casinos and online casinos as well. Some countries have embraced gambling, while others have not. There are many different types of laws regarding gambling around the world, and one should not expect the law to be the same everywhere.

In the United States, many websites have been providing various forms of gambling services to U.S. citizens. In 1960, the U.S. passed an act called the Wire Act regarding gambling. Due to this act, telephone betting, as well as online gambling are considered illegal. Another act was passed in 2006 stating that it is illegal for financial institutions and banks to process online gambling related transactions. A number of U.S. states have introduced new laws and regulations regarding gambling since 2006.

On the other hand, online gambling and offline gambling have been a booming business in the United Kingdom. The reason for this could be that they have regulated it very well. In the UK, gambling is legal as long as the individual is over 18 years of age. Foreign based websites and businesses may also provide gambling services to UK citizens as long as they hold a license to operate in the UK.

The laws regarding gambling in Canada have been unclear for quite some time. The reason is that there was not a single law stating whether gambling involving real money is legal or illegal. In various provinces, the state owns and operates its own casinos.

Similarly to the UK, Australia also has its fair share of gambling enthusiasts. There is currently no law prohibiting Australian citizens from gambling online. Sports betting is also legal, as long as they are using a government approved and licensed business. However, Australia has different states and territories, and they all have their own laws and regulations regarding gambling, in addition to Australia’s federal laws.

In China, the government has legalized only two forms of gambling. These are Welfare Lottery and Sports Lottery. The government does not provide gambling companies with licenses to operate online gambling sites within China. Chinese citizens are also not allowed to gamble online.

South Africa only allows sports betting. In fact, the state has even legalized it. However, it is illegal for companies to run online casinos that are based within South Africa’s geographical boundaries.

These are just a few of the gambling laws that operate in some of the countries around the world. Before venturing off to gamble online or offline, one should familiarize oneself with the gambling laws of the country in which one intends to gamble.
