Decatur, Illinois – A woman loses her $50k lottery win because the ticket was purchased with drug money

Although a Macon County judge had originally ruled in Tykisha Lofton’s favor, the three-judge Fourth District Appeals Court has ruled that the state should keep the proceeds of a lottery win because the ticket was purchased with drug money. Police found the lottery ticket when they raided a Decatur home where Lofton lived with her boyfriend, Terrance Norwood. Norwood was sentenced in October 2015 for drug dealing, drug possession and armed violence offenses. Lofton said that she purchased the ticket with money that she earned from babysitting, but the court did not believe her and ruled that the ticket was most likely purchased with drug money. As a result, Lofton must forfeit the proceeds of the win to the state.

“Because of the direct link between the lottery winnings and the funds used to purchase the original ticket, the winnings can reasonably be considered “proceeds traceable” to Norwood’s illegal drug sales,” the appeals court judges wrote. “The trial court’s conclusion to the contrary was in error.”
