Cincinnati, Ohio – Homeless people set up camp near Jack Casino

Approximately 30 homeless people living in 17 tents near Jack Casino off Central Parkway and Reading Road were asked to leave by the police department on Wednesday or face arrest. Although the Cincinnati Police and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office were planning on evicting the homeless camp residents on Wednesday at 1:00 PM, the eviction was cancelled after the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition asked U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Black to allow them to stay, and to overrule an order from a lower court banning homeless camps.

According to a statement by the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition; “All of our shelters are either full or operating over capacity. Our shelters literally never stop working. People living in the camps at the center of this debate are working daily to obtain a better situation. The camp has been working with service-providers to get as many people as possible into shelter and housing; calling, setting appointments and case-managing each other. And in fact people who have had the opportunity have moved into shelter, housing and other programs.”

While the courts debate the issue of what to do about the homeless camp, the sheriff’s officials have said that no one wants to arrest the homeless. “Right now, we’re going to be working with them to try to relocate them, anyone that’s willing to leave voluntarily would be helpful,” said Jim Knapp, sheriff’s spokesman.
