Casinos may be coming to the state of Georgia

Interest is growing among a number of lawmakers to allow casinos to come to Georgia. Georgia lawmakers are discussing a casino bill that would allow half a dozen casinos to be set up across the state, with some of the revenue going to the Hope Scholarship (A non-profit organization designed to assist college students) and pre-kindergarten programs. “It is a limited bill that allows for destination casinos around the state so you will not see a replication of Atlantic City here.” Chip Lake told Channel 2’s Lori Geary. Chip Lake is part of a coalition called the Committee to Preserve Hope Scholarships. However, Professor John Kindt from the University of Illinois disagrees, arguing that casinos bring more crime, create new addicts and don’t produce the kinds of profits projected. However in order to issue a statewide ballot so that voters can decide whether they want casinos in Georgia or not, Georgia lawmakers in both the House and Senate must firstly approve the bill by a two-thirds majority vote.
