Ashington, Northumberland – A UK Gala Bingo worker dies for 56 minutes and then comes back to life

It started off as an average day in the life of Sonia Burton, 50. She was scheduled to start work at 5:30 p.m. at the Gala Bingo Hall in Ashington, but went into work at 4.45 p.m. so that she could have a cup of coffee and catch up with her work friends. That’s when it happened. Burton suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed on the floor as her boss performed CPR on her. The paramedics arrived on the scene within four minutes and worked frantically to resuscitate her. Burton was without a pulse for 56 minutes, but the paramedics refused to give up on her. They were still trying to revive her while transporting her to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington. By the time Burton arrived at the hospital, she started breathing again. She was then taken to the Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

“The only thing I remember is my late husband coming to me and saying ‘it’s not your time, Sonia, go back to the children.’ Then I woke up in hospital.” recalls Sonia. “It’s strange to think I was technically dead for an hour.”

The mother of four describes herself as a living miracle and now sees life in a totally different way.

“Every day I think how incredible it is that I’m still here,” she said. “I don’t take anything for granted.”
