A study by the University of British Columbia (UBC) finds a positive correlation between problem gambling and the slot machine

The Centre for Gambling Research at the University of British Columbia recently completed an experiment which showed a positive correlation between the modern slot machine and gambling addiction. The experiment involved taking two groups of people and asking them to play the slot machine for 30 minutes while completing other tasks at the same time. The first group of subjects consisted of people who have never played the slot machines before. The second group of subjects included experienced slot machine players. Research found that the players who were more immersed in the game were unable to successfully complete the secondary set of tasks that they were asked to complete while playing the slot machine. These are the subjects who are more at risk of developing a gambling addiction.

“This confirms there is indeed a link between gambling addiction and the so-called slot machine zone,” says Clark. “When the experienced slot machine gamblers played, we found they not only felt that they lost track of time and their surroundings, but they often failed to notice the shapes on the periphery of the machine.” “There is potential for slot machines to be designed in a way that promotes more responsible use by disrupting the slot machine zone state,” said Clark. “Since static signs and stickers on slot machines are unlikely to distract immersed players, the messages should be eye-catching and as close as possible to the slots’ reels.” said Clark.

This may explain why problem gambling notices that are posted on the walls of a casino are not effective in communicating the message to problem gamblers. Problem gamblers who are totally immersed in the game and playing the slot machines in a trance-like state are not likely to see or heed their warnings.
