A retired New York firefighter wins a $5 million lottery jackpot

Carmelo Mercado (65) was a firefighter based at Engine Company 312/Battalion 49 in Astoria for many years before the tragic events of 911 took place. After 911, Mercado spent a few days looking for fallen comrades, and subsequently developed lung ailments. He retired from the New York City Fire Department in 2004 after 27 years on the job. Mercado has since been a beneficiary of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act which provides funding for health care programs for firefighters, police officers and others affected by 911 related ailments. Mercado’s luck dramatically changed after he bought a couple of lottery tickets and ended up winning a whopping $5 million. “I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it, to be honest with you. I didn’t sleep for two days after it happened. My mind went totally blank.” Mercado said. “I will certainly help out my family and this year’s Christmas presents will be a little bigger than last year’s,” Mercado said.
