A Pennsylvania lawmaker is caught up in an illegal gambling investigation

Seventh term Democratic State Rep. Marc Gergely, 46, of White Oak, appeared at his arraignment in the Pittsburgh suburbs on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to a number of charges against him. Gergely is accused of using his political position to assist a friend to run an illegal video gambling ring. The illegal gambling operation consisted of installing 335 video gambling machines at some 70 restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and other locations outside Pittsburgh. Gergely is charged with two counts of corrupt organizations and one count each of dealing in the proceeds of illegal activity, criminal attempt/gambling devices, criminal conspiracy and violation of state election code prohibiting cash or anonymous contributions. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March 30.
