A Haj agent gambles away $1.3 million of pilgrims’ money in a U.S. casino

A federal court in Chicago has sentenced Minhas (who is a Haj, and an Umrah tour operator) to 9.5 years in prison for taking $1.3 million from a group of trusting Pakistanis and blowing their money in a U.S. casino. After paying Minhas $1.3 million to organize a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Minhas accepted the money and sent the group members electronic messages that the Saudi Embassy would not give them visas to enter the Kingdom. Judge Fiesman said that the electronic messages that Minhas sent “were harsh and increased the nature of the crime against these poor people who trusted Minhas with their money.” Minhas kept his head bowed down during the court proceedings. When he was given the opportunity to speak, he burst into tears and said that he had lost everything, and that he was sorry.
